Tips to Ensure Your Antiques Remain in Pristine Condition

Are you an antique collector or dealer? If so, you know the importance of keeping these items in great condition. However, doing this can present a challenge if you are unfamiliar with the proper techniques, products and equipment that should be used. The good news is that no matter if you love Roman Antiquities, Greek antiquities or anything in between, you can benefit from the tips highlighted here.

Tip: Antique Furniture

You should never polish or clean any of your antique furniture with a commercial grade cleaning product or type of furniture polish. The right way to clean these items is to use a soft cloth that is sprayed with some type of glass cleaner.

Tip: Stoneware Dishes

If you are trying to remove stains from any stoneware dishes, it can be a bit tricky. In order to effectively, and safely, remove stains you need to soak them in a gallon of hot water with two dissolved denture tablets.

Tip: Furniture Oil

It is important that you never use any type of furniture oil, such as lemon or orange oil on your antique furniture. Instead, simply wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth or use a type of clear wax paste, such as beeswax, to help and keep the wood in great condition.

Tip: Prevent Mildew

In order to prevent mildew damage to your old art work and photographs that are hung on outside or damp walls, you need to either glue or tape some type of plastic sheet to the back that will create a barrier for vapors.

Tip: Fix Broken Antiques

You should only use white glue, rather than super glue or any other type, for adhering broken parts of pottery, stoneware or porcelain back together. Once you have applied the glue, you should press the broken pieces together and then slightly shift them to ensure a proper fit. Be sure that you remove any excess glue from both of the items sides with a cloth you have dampened and then allow the glue to dry. If necessary, you can use masking tape to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries.

When it comes to any type of antique or artifact, it is crucial that you take the time to learn how to properly care for them. When you do this you can feel confident that your antiques will remain in great condition for years to come.
